Synopsis

Each body has a different line. And each line tilts differently from another. Each body stands differently. Each body has a different way of walking. And each step creates different movements.

People with cerebral palsy have different movements and balance points. The muscular constriction creates unique movements, while the arched spine generates complex balance points. Kyung-ae Ro discovers a new movement language that could not be realized with dance techniques in the movement of these disabilities. It is a new balance that arises from 'imbalance' and an unfamiliar beauty that 'failure' derives, which is different from the perfect balance that has been pursued for a long time in dance. When the balance is collapsed, many fragments of movement are created, and these are movements that cannot be found in balance. ‘Instability’ produces dynamics ‘stability’ cannot offer; ‘imbalance’ leads to aberrations impossible in ‘balance.’
21°11' also focuses on the actions of 'standing, sitting, walking, jumping, running', which are the basics of movement. Kyung-ae Ro considers that the basics are connected with the fundamentals. The basic actions of standing, walking, jumping and running clearly reveal each person's body shape and unique method of movement.
These seemingly simple actions embodied in performers with a disability and those without expand to combinations of shapes and movements, dismantling the firm standards governing the beauty. And this work questions our thoughts about what is normal and abnormal, what is right and wrong, what is beautiful and what is not.
