Synopsis

Each body has a different line. And each line tilts differently from another. Each body stands differently. Each body has a different way of walking. And each step creates different movements.

People with cerebral palsy have different movements and balance points. The muscular constriction creates unique movements, while the arched spine generates complex balance points. Kyung-ae Ro discovers a new movement language that could not be realized with dance techniques in the movement of these disabilities. It is a new balance that arises from 'imbalance' and an unfamiliar beauty that 'failure' derives, which is different from the perfect balance that has been pursued for a long time in dance. When the balance is collapsed, many fragments of movement are created, and these are movements that cannot be found in balance. ‘Instability’ produces dynamics ‘stability’ cannot offer; ‘imbalance’ leads to aberrations impossible in ‘balance.’
21°11' also focuses on the actions of 'standing, sitting, walking, jumping, running', which are the basics of movement. Kyung-ae Ro considers that the basics are connected with the fundamentals. The basic actions of standing, walking, jumping and running clearly reveal each person's body shape and unique method of movement.
These seemingly simple actions embodied in performers with a disability and those without expand to combinations of shapes and movements, dismantling the firm standards governing the beauty. And this work questions our thoughts about what is normal and abnormal, what is right and wrong, what is beautiful and what is not.

artEL

artEL is the company led by choreographer Kyung-ae Ro, founded in 2010.
Kyung-ae Ro gradually expanded her choreography from the exploration of movement to visual elements, space, sound, and text. And this makes her works to collaborate with various fields of visual art, sound art and graphic design. Kyung Ae Ro begins the work by questioning about simple and basic elements such as signs, listening, and combining and placing. For each work, choreography and research methodologies are experimented and explored. Through these methodologies, artEL's work and education program are connected in the same but different ways. Mainly based on performance, artEL is expanding the work into exhibitions and research projects. Concurrently with the creation of project <Listen/Hear>, artEL has experimented with the senses of hearing and sight.
artEL has been working at major art institutions in Korea, such as Ob/Scene Festival, Seoul Museum of Art, Nam June Paik Art Center, Leeum Museum of Art, Festival Bom, and Asia Culture Center. In 2020, the work <tape line -/ bus stop> was in the collection of the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art.
